Shiodome High-rises Contribute to Urban Heat Island Effect
Shiodome District Redevelopment Raises Temperatures by One-Two Degrees Celsius

A professor of climatology at Tokyo Metropolitan University has reported that a cluster of fourteen high-rises in Tokyo's newly redeveloped waterfront donwtown probably contributes to the "urban heat island effect." He says that the huddle of tall buildings on the Shiodome Shio-site in Minato ward blocks off the cool sea breeze blowing from Tokyo Bay. The high-rises as a whole look like a gigantic screen when we see them from the sea.

He also says that in some downwind areas of northern Minato ward, such as Toranomon and Shimbashi, the average summertime highest temperatures between July 20 and August 31, 2002 were one-two degrees Celsius higher than in other waterfront areas. He found it out through studying the temperatures that he had measured in some seaside districts after the completion of the Shio-site community.

The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry has been concerned about how this kind of cluster of high-rises can impact on the urban heat island effect. The ministry is beginning to recognize the need to calculate how the wind blows in planning urban redevelopement.
